Do You Know The Seven Secrets To Successfully Writing a Hardship Letter?

Jim and Rena were really, really stuck.

They had heard that the best way to save their house from the foreclosure procedure, was to begin with a hardship letter.

So they sat down late one night after a long day of work and frustration to write this hardship letter.  Immediately they felt stuck and backed up against the wall.  They couldn’t figure out where to begin.

What is a hardship letter?

How in the world do you write that hardship letter?

And ultimately they were wondering who should they send this letter to?

But where in the world do you learn how to write a hardship letter?

They don’t teach you that stuff in school.  No one on the job required them to write a hardship letter.

So, you can imagine? They had heard about what a hardship letter is and that may be the best place to start.  They were stuck because they didn’t know how to write a hardship letter.

I shared with them the seven powerful secrets to successfully writing a hardship letter.  Would you believe, they were able to successfully get that hardship letter completed, present it to the bank, and it was read, they were able to get a loan modification and stop their foreclosure.

So, I just want to take a moment and share the seven hot secrets to successfully writing a hardship letter with you.

  • The first thing I want to say, the first secret, and this is so important. Before you sit down to write, make sure you get sufficient rest.  If you sit down to write a hardship letter without getting sufficient rest the night before, I promise you you’ll end up writing all kinds of complaints.  You’ll end up sounding whiny.  It’s easy to end up sounding frustrated, ticked off and like you are tired in your letter.  Your demeanor and your mood will come through the words you pick and the words you use.  I’ve always encouraged people who are seeking to write a hardship letter to first of all make sure you get sufficient rest.  Get a good night’s sleep.  Get up in the morning, relaxed and refreshed, then sit down to write that hardship letter.

  • Secondly, make sure you’ve gotten a good breakfast.  You don’t want to write in such a way that you sound hungry. How do you sound hungry when you write you ask? Well, if you write in a way that’s rushed.  If you write in a hurry.  If you’re writing and you’re anxious because you haven’t had a good breakfast, and you’re hungry, I promise you, your success will be limited. The truth is when you’ve had good sleep and a good meal in the morning, you will actually write better.  You will think more clearly.  You will have more energy. You will write with more confidence.  And you will write with more power.

  • Third, get comfortable.  Don’t be trying to write a hardship letter while you’re going for a walk or while you’re in an uncomfortable position or writing in the car and you want to write the letter and then drop it off in the mailbox. None of that stuff. Get comfortable, sit at a relaxed, in a relaxed position at the table and get your mindset prepared to write.  So in summary, Get good rest, Get a good meal, Get a good breakfast, Get comfortable. Now, the truth is even for anybody who’s a good writer, who’s taken the time to read this post, that is able to bring themselves to the light and accept hardship letter.  There are many circumstances in which more than the hardship letter is needed.  Do they have to know who to put that letter in front of, do they have to know in what way to process that letter? You have to be able to find the right department, or the right person in the right department.  You need a set of knowledge and awareness of the foreclosure procedure in your state or in your county.  So, there are many challenges that you would be faced with.

  • Morningtime is a period where you are most fresh, your mind is able to be most relaxed — in other words, you have the most power possible in the morning because you have not gone through the day yet and experienced all the journey that tires you out, that wears you down, that makes you bored and frustrated.  So, secure a piece of time, a portion of time in the morning where you can sit down and create the hardship letter.  Okay? Plan your letter.  It’s important to plan your letter, don’t just get there and write.  If you want to create five main points, create a bulleted list of what you want to talk about in your letter, what you’re going to say, plan it out, plan out what you’re asking for, plan out who you’re talking to, plan out what you’re going to articulate as your hardship.  You have to be able to plan the entire letter out.  Plan what your closing remarks are going to be, plan what your powerful call for action — what are you asking the bank to do, plan the entire letter from beginning to end.  I want you to articulate your hardship clearly.  Many people have had tremendous hardship, hardships that anybody — if anybody else had to go through that hardship, they too would be down on their luck.  Unfortunately, they don’t know how to articulate their hardships clearly.  They don’t know how to spell it out, how to speak it out, how to phrase it, how to word it clearly.  It’s best to articulate that hardship clearly so that the person reading your letter will get a clear picture of what happened.  Don’t surround your hardship with a story, just simply tell the fact of what happened.  Don’t go on and on and on and on and on — nobody wants to read that.  But if by telling the hardship simply and clearly, you get most power.
  • Do not blame others for your problem in your letter, especially the bank, or the mortgage lender.  Don’t write a letter articulating your hardship and then include in there — if the bank had done this, or the mortgage lender had done this, or so and so had done this, I would have been able to do this — that the bank didn’t do this and didn’t do that and be honest.  Don’t write that way.  Stay free of blaming anybody.  Take full responsibility, express yourself clearly, and articulate with confidence what happened and with confidence what you plan to do.  That brings me to the final point — clearly state your plan of action.  Clearly state your plan to get out of the foreclosure situation you’re in and indicate how the bank can help you.  Make it as clear as day.  Make is crystal clear.  Don’t leave the letter unended by leaving it up to the bank.  I’m saying, can you please help me.  No, ask for what you want.  If you’re needing a forebearance ask for it, if you’re needing a mortgage payment reduction then ask for that.  If you’re asking for deed in lieu,  ask for it.  Whatever it is that you want you must ask for clearly in the hardship letter.  Give your lender or banker a clear and concise call to action.  Provide clear details about what you want the banker or lender to do for you.  And make certain you explain clearly how your circumstances have changed so that you are now able to make your monthly payments on time and in full every month.
